Do you provide referals to instructors outside Seattle or instructors who teach other instruments? Yes we do! Please visit our Resources page for details.
At what age can my child begin lessons? At the Suzuki Institute of Seattle, children as young as four can begin cello, violin, or piano, and children as young as three can enroll in the Sing & Play class. The Suzuki Method can also work well for eight or nine year-old beginners. Students are accepted at the teacher's discretion.
Does my child have to take the Sing & Play class before starting instrument lessons? Not necessarily, but the class serves as an excellent preparation for families interested in studying within the Suzuki environment by introducing the rhythms and songs used in instrument lessons. Taking size and maturity into consideration, an instructor may suggest that your child first take the Sing & Play class.
What do I need to know to enroll in Sing & Play? Sing & Play courses are taught four times per year. The Fall, Winter, and Spring courses are usually held on Saturdays at the Suzuki Institute in Greenwood (directions). The summer course is held on weekdays. The cost is $120 (this may vary for summer session).
Registration occurs shortly before the course begins each quarter. There is no pre-registration. For specific information about registration dates, as well as class dates and times, please see the Sing & Play page or contact the director, Dalia Taylor. When registering, please leave your name, your child's name & birthday, your address, email address, and phone number, and your class time preference.
How do I decide on an instrument for my child? Expose your child to a variety of instruments through recordings, observing lessons, attending concerts, or participating in the Sing & Play class. Give your child a chance to show a preference. Following his or her natural interest is always the best idea, if possible. Remember that your child's choice will be most influenced by simple exposure.
Cello and violin are orchestral instruments. As your child progresses, he or she will have the opportunity to play in youth, school, and community orchestras; this kind of social interaction often appeals to adolescents. An additional benefit of selecting violin as your child's instrument is that violins are compact and easy to carry.
Some consider the piano to be more of a "solitary" instrument because it usually is not part of school bands or orchestras. Pianos, however, are often very familiar and readily accessible, and the initial ease with which a sound is produced makes the piano an appealing instrument. Piano study leads to an understanding of chords and harmony that may allow your child to pick up an additional instrument like guitar. Moreover, pianists are always in high demand, being asked to fulfill a wide variety of services, from accompanying small string groups and orchestras, to performing at church services and weddings.
How do I register for lessons? Each instructor handles her or his own registration individually. To register, please contact an instructor. Contact information can be found at our piano, violin, cello, or directory pages.
Can I observe group lessons? Definitely! The best time to observe group lessons at the Suzuki Institute are as follows: violin - Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm; cello - Mondays from 5pm to 6pm; piano - please contact an instructor to arrange a time. If you would like to observe a Sing & Play class, please contact the instructor to arrange a time.
Can I enroll my child in group lessons independently of individual lessons? No. Only those students enrolled in individual lessons participate in group lessons. A group lesson usually consists of a subset of students from one particular teacher. Please visit our piano, violin, and cello pages for additional details about group lessons.
How often will my child have a lesson? Every student receives a weekly private lesson with his or her teacher. Additionally, he or she attends a group lesson either every week or every other week, depending on the instrument.
How long are lessons? Initially, private lessons are 20 minutes long. The length of each private lesson increases as the student advances. Groups lessons are one hour each.
