  • Anne Hayes, Meet the Orchestra (1991). Ages 3-7. Imaginative introduction to the characteristics of each instrument of the orchestra with playful illustrations of various animals plaing each instrument. (Book).
  • Jean Marzollo, Musical Instruments (1992). Ages 3-7. An introduction to each family of instruments in an orchestra with additional information on world music instruments and home-made instruments. (Book).
  • Karla Kuskin, The Philharmonic Gets Dressed (1982). Agest 3-7. Picture book showing the preparations of 105 members of an orchestra, getting ready for work, playing a symphony in a grand concert hall (Book).
  • Marjorie Priceman, Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (1995). Ages 3-7 Written in rhyme with stylized illustrations, each page introduces one additional instrument and thus travels from a solo to a chamber group of ten, culminating in an orchestra. Lighthearted. (Book).
  • Donald Elliott, Alligators and Music (1984). Ages 5-12. Insightful, lightheared introduction to the characteristics of each instrument of the orchestra written from the instrument's point of view. (Book).
  • Anita Ganeri, Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra: Benjamin Britten's Composition on CD Narrated by Ben Kingsley (1996). Information on history of orchestra since the 17th century, instruments of the orchestra, and famous composers. (CD and Book).
  • Barrie Carson Turner, Living Instrument Series: Living Violing, Living Piano, Living Flute, Living Clarinet (1996). Ages 8-12. These books discuss the history of each insturment, the famous composers associated with each instrument, and contain a CD of musical selections feature the instrument. (Book and CD).
  • Melvin Berger, The Violin Book (1972). Includes history of the violin, how they are made, violin music and composers, and famous musicians.
  • Bill Ballantine, The Violin: Introducing the Instrument (1971). Includes a history of the violin, how they are made, violin music and composers, famous musicians, and violin care. (Book).
  • William Starr, The Suzuki Violinist (1976). Overview of the Suzuki method, violin playing posture and technique, and idscussion of each piece in Suzuki Violin Book I through Book V. For Book VI through Book X the book discusses tonalization, bowing, intonation, shifting, vibrato, memorization, and reading music. (Book).
  • Alan Blackwood, The Orchestra: An Introduction to the World of Classical Music (1993). Traces the history of the orchestra and discusses the musical instruments that make up various orchestral families. Includes pictures of instruments (Book).
